5 Best Mexican Restaurants in Jacksonville Worth the Taco Run

We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

  • Authenticity and Flavor. We favored spots serving traditional dishes with bold, genuine flavor. No bland, watered-down Tex-Mex here.

  • Menu Variety. We checked for enough choice to cover different cravings and dietary needs. Nobody wants to be stuck ordering chips for dinner.

  • Value for Money. We weighed portion sizes against prices. A good Mexican meal should fill you up without flattening your wallet.

  • Dining Atmosphere. We looked at the vibe, service, and overall comfort. Great food tastes even better when the place feels welcoming.

There’s something about leaving my favorite bowling spots that makes me suddenly crave tacos like it’s part of the scorecard (¡Órale!). That’s usually when I start hunting for the best Mexican restaurant in Jacksonville.

I want crispy nachos, properly loaded tacos, and salsa that actually wakes me up. Bonus points if the place has enough atmosphere to keep the post-bowling energy going.

Jacksonville has plenty of Mexican spots, but some hit the craving far better than others. I narrowed these down by flavor, vibe, and value so you can roll straight into a good meal.

How much does it cost to dine at a Mexican restaurant in Jacksonville?

Most Mexican restaurant meals in Jacksonville cost around $10 to $20 per main dish. Casual taco joints tend to be cheaper, while trendier cantinas can push the bill higher.

Drinks and appetizers usually run $4 to $12. Lunch specials are often $9 to $13, making them a handy budget option.

For dinner, expect entrées to cost about $13 to $22. Extras like margaritas, guacamole, queso, and dessert can quickly bump up the final tab.

1. Mr. Gordos Tacos and Cantina

Website

Address: 1567 University Blvd W

Contact: (904) 367-3099

Hours: Monday–Thursday 11 AM–9 PM; Friday–Saturday 11 AM–10 PM; Sunday 11 AM–8:30 PM

Mr. Gordos Tacos and Cantina is the sort of place I’d pick when I want a big Mexican menu without overthinking dinner.

Tacos get plenty of attention, but fajitas, enchiladas, burritos, seafood, and steaks keep things from feeling one-note.

I like that there’s a dedicated vegan section rather than one sad meat-free afterthought. The burrito vegano, vegan tacos, and vegan enchiladas give plant-based diners a few proper choices.

The drinks menu brings plenty of margarita options, which suits the lively cantina feel nicely. Dine-in, pickup, and delivery make it easy whether you’re settling in or heading home.

The downside is that the vegan selection is still fairly small compared with the full menu. Specialty tacos can add up quickly too if you order several à la carte.

Pros

  • Broad menu beyond just tacos
  • Dedicated vegan options
  • Plenty of margarita choices
  • Dine-in, pickup, and delivery available
  • Good mix of Mexican classics and specialty dishes

Cons

  • Vegan selection is fairly limited
  • Specialty tacos can get pricey when ordered individually

These tacos are handcrafted and simply amazing!

Stopped in here today as we had seen it open, and boy am I glad we did! These tacos are handcrafted and simply amazing! This is going to be my new favorite place to eat lunch during the week!! Taco Tuesdays are $1 off any taco!! Got 4 different tacos and could not eat but two of them! So glad we ate here!!! Staff was amazing, very friendly and welcoming!!

We were greeted so politely and seated very fast. The service and atmosphere are bright, welcoming, as well as homey! Also, I would like to mention the server was very attentive and speedy. So thank you, Oscar, for your service and your attentiveness. I truly appreciate it! The food was spectacular!! I got the quesabirria with a side of rice and beans. My partner got the Baja fish taco and the enchiladas Verde. It was perfect!! Highly recommend!

2. Don Taco Leon

Address: 12220 Atlantic Blvd #109

Contact: (904) 410-5727

Hours: Monday–Thursday 11 AM–9 PM; Friday–Saturday 11 AM–10 PM; Sunday 11 AM–7 PM

Don Taco Leon is a good pick when I’m craving Mexican food with a bit more regional character. Its Michoacán influence gives the menu some personality, while tacos, fajitas, seafood, and steaks keep the choices broad.

I like that the kitchen leans into classics such as al pastor and charcoal-grilled meats without making the menu feel too niche.

There’s enough variety here for mixed groups, which saves everyone from the usual dinner debate.

Catering is available for everything from office lunches to family celebrations, so it works beyond a casual meal out. The family behind the restaurant brings more than a decade of restaurant experience to the table.

The main drawback is Sunday’s earlier 7 PM closing time. If you’re planning a late weekend dinner, you’ll need to beat the clock.

Pros

  • Michoacán-inspired menu with plenty of regional character
  • Broad selection beyond tacos
  • Al pastor and charcoal-grilled meats available
  • Catering for private and corporate events
  • More than a decade of restaurant experience behind the concept

Cons

  • Closes earlier on Sundays at 7 PM

Unique flavor salsa… and a salsa bar. The quality of meat was superb!

Wonderful discovery! Freshly made chips.  Unique flavor salsa… and a salsa bar. The quality of meat was superb! I had street tacos: carnitas and steak, then an American taco with shredded beef.  All very good! Then we had a chimichanga with shredded beef. All meat cuts were tasty and lean. The street corn dish was quite flavorful. Lovely mural on the walls.  We will be back!

If you love authentic Mexican food, we recommend you try this place.

If you love authentic Mexican food, we recommend you try this place. The owner is the same owner of the former Casa Leon at Mayport Road. I am so happy they are closer to us now, and the food is as good as I remember. Service was amazing, and the drinks and food were on point.

3. Oaxaca Club

Website

Address: 131 1st Ave N #102

Contact: (904) 372-0537

Hours: Sunday–Thursday 11 AM–10 PM; Friday–Saturday 11 AM–11 PM

Oaxaca Club is where I’d go when tacos alone won’t quite cut it. The menu leans polished, with Oaxacan flavors, coastal seafood, steaks, moles, and plenty of mezcal to keep dinner interesting.

I like that it feels more like a proper night out than a quick pit stop. Short rib birria, carne asada, ceviche, and other richer dishes give the menu plenty of range.

The agave bar is another big draw, with more than 60 tequilas and mezcals to explore. Its Jacksonville Beach location makes it an easy choice for dinner before or after a stroll near the water.

The downside is the pricing, which sits well above casual taqueria territory.

Bigger groups should note that parties of eight or more have a 20% gratuity added automatically.

Pros

  • Polished Oaxacan-inspired menu
  • Strong seafood, steak, and birria selection
  • More than 60 tequilas and mezcals
  • Great Jacksonville Beach location
  • Good choice for a nicer night out

Cons

  • Pricier than a casual taqueria
  • 20% gratuity added for parties of eight or more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of Jax, coming from a Mexican family.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of Jax, coming from a Mexican family. The food is amazing, and unlike anything I’ve had at the cookie-cutter Mexican restaurants. The food is delicious and well-seasoned; the drinks are phenomenal. They make my favorite espresso martini here in JAX, but my favorite is the guava margarita. Not only is the food great, but the ambience is beautiful, perfect for a date night.

All of it was great.

Really nice experience this evening at Oaxaca Club. Our bartender/server, Taylor, was a true pleasure – friendly and knowledgeable on all the menu items (food and bar), she made our evening. We each had a tequila flight and split mahi mahi tacos and an order of guacamole. All of it was great

4. Taqueria Cinco

taqueria-cinco

Website

Address: 809 Lomax St

Contact: (904) 312-9113

Hours: Monday–Thursday 11 AM–9 PM; Friday–Saturday 11 AM–10 PM; Sunday 11 AM–3 PM

Taqueria Cinco is the kind of Five Points spot I’d pick when I want tacos without the fuss. The menu keeps things street-food focused, with tostadas, quesadillas, huaraches, enchiladas, and plenty of taco options.

I like that they source locally as often as possible, which fits the neighborhood feel nicely.

Weekend brunch adds a fun twist too, especially if tacos before noon sound perfectly reasonable.

The drinks menu gives the place a more social, hangout-friendly edge than your average quick taco stop. It works just as well for a casual lunch as it does for catching up with friends.

The main drawback is Sunday’s early 3 PM closing time. Diners wanting a huge Tex-Mex-style menu may find the tighter taqueria focus a little limiting, too.

Pros

  • Strong Five Points neighborhood feel
  • Street-food-focused menu with plenty of taco choices
  • Weekend brunch available
  • Good drinks selection for casual hangouts
  • Locally sourced ingredients when possible

Cons

  • Closes early at 3 PM on Sundays
  • Less suited to diners wanting a huge Tex-Mex-style menu

Very cool atmosphere with unique, authentic Mexican.

Very cool atmosphere with unique authentic Mexican. Unique adult drinks and even some non alcoholic ones like agua fresca, which was amazing. Al Pastor taco was my favorite (served Fri-Sun), and the queso on special was fantastic. Couldn’t fit dessert, so I ordered the churros to go…cause why not?! Will definitely be back.

Some of the best Mexican food in town.

Some of the best Mexican food in town. It was one of the only places that reminds me of the quality in Texas. Their suadero and chorizo tacos are great, and the portions are very large. You have to get their desserts too!

5. Pepe’s Hacienda & Restaurant

pepes-hacienda-restaurant

Website

Address: 3615 Dupont Ave Suite 900  & 9239 Merrill Rd Unit 1

Contact: (904) 636-8131, (904) 559-2131

Hours: Daily 8 AM–10 PM

Pepe’s Hacienda & Restaurant is where I’d go when dinner somehow turns into grocery shopping too. The restaurant shares space with a Hispanic market, butcher, and bakery, so it’s impressively handy.

I like that both Jacksonville locations open early and stay open through dinner. That makes breakfast tacos, a lunch stop, or a late family meal equally doable.

The menu covers familiar Mexican favourites, while the market side adds meats, produce, baked goods, and pantry staples. It’s more of a practical one-stop food stop than a polished date-night destination.

The downside is that the market-and-restaurant setup feels busier and more casual than a standalone restaurant. If you’re after a quiet, upscale evening, this probably isn’t the best fit.

Pros

  • Restaurant, Hispanic market, butcher, and bakery in one stop
  • Two Jacksonville locations
  • Open daily from breakfast through dinner
  • Family-friendly setup
  • Handy for grabbing groceries after a meal

Cons

  • More casual than a polished date-night restaurant/market-and-restaurant setup can feel busier than a standalone dining spot
